June 1 marks the start of Pride Month—a month-long celebration honoring the LGBTQ+ community. Pride recognizes the diversity, resilience, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other LGBTQ+ individuals. It also commemorates the ongoing fight for equal rights, including gender identity, sexual orientation, and marriage equality.
Nothing is more quintessential to the Pride experience than attending a parade or festival—and there are plenty of events to enjoy during this busy and joyful month for community members and allies alike. Since pets are beloved members of our families, it’s no surprise that they’re often brought along to join the fun!
But June can be hot in many parts of the country, and there are a few hazards to watch out for when including your furry friends in the festivities. Follow these tips for fun and safe ways to celebrate Pride with your pets!
Dress Them Up… Responsibly
Bright, colorful outfits are part of the fun at Pride celebrations—and it’s even more adorable when pets get to strut their stuff too!
When dressing your pets, make sure they’re wearing light, breathable bandanas, harnesses, and collars. Thin shirts and cute costumes are okay—unless the temperature climbs. In hot and humid weather, less is usually best.
As a general rule, be extra cautious if the humidity is above 70% or temperatures are over 85–90°F (adjust based on your pet’s breed and tolerance). Also, avoid hot pavement that could burn sensitive paws!
Make Sure Your Pride Events Are Pet-Friendly
It may seem obvious, but always double-check that the events you’re attending are pet-friendly! Some Pride events may have designated pet zones, while others might be too crowded or unsuitable for animals.
It’s also helpful to confirm whether restaurants, bars, or venues have patios or pet-welcoming options—so you can enjoy socializing during and after the parade with your furry companion.
Check your local event listings to be sure your four-legged friend is welcome.
Know Your Pet’s Limits
Your pet’s comfort should always come first. Some animals may not enjoy crowds, heat, or overstimulation—and that’s okay!
Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs and bulldogs struggle more in hot weather. Shy or anxious dogs may prefer to stay home where it’s quiet and cool. Pride festivals are high-energy and attention-grabbing—know your pet’s personality and tolerance levels so everyone has a good time.
Avoid Loud Noises and Overstimulating Environments
Many Pride parades feature live music, dancing, cheering, and sirens. If your pet hasn’t been socialized in noisy or chaotic settings, it may be best to skip the crowd this time around.
Keep their well-being in mind, and plan accordingly.
Stay Hydrated and Cool
Pack a pet-friendly day bag! Bring collapsible water bowls, fresh water, treats, poop bags, and even a pocket fan. Shade is your friend—so seek it out when you can and take breaks often.
Keep Them Secure
Leash laws are in place for a reason—especially in busy public spaces. Always use a sturdy leash, harness, or stroller for small pets. Avoid retractable leashes, which can be harder to control in crowds.
Make sure your pet’s ID tags are up to date and securely attached.
Celebrate With Pride!
Whether you’re waving rainbow flags, dancing in the streets, or lounging in the park with your pup in a cute bandana, Pride Month is all about celebrating love, acceptance, and community. Including your pet in the fun is a beautiful way to share that joy—just make sure their needs are being met along the way.
So grab the glitter, pour some extra water in that bowl, and get ready to paws and reflect on how far we’ve come—while dancing into an even brighter, more inclusive future.
Happy Pride, and stay safe out there—for you and your pets! 🐶🌈🐾🎉
