Since I published my ebook, “Freedom, Not Frenzy: The Relief Vet’s Survival and Success Manual,” I realized something surprising: I miss writing. I believe that veterinary medicine needs more open, honest, and positive spaces for thoughtful conversations and discourse about the tough stuff in our profession.
Because of this, I have an exciting update: I’m officially relaunching the Veterinary Rounds Blog. That means that every other Tuesday, I’ll be posting about veterinary medicine, burnout, clinic culture, work/life balance, lifestyle design, and other “hot takes” related to the veterinary industry as a whole. The first installment will be live June 30th!
Facebook and Instagram are great for quick chats and humorous videos, and my community, “The Relief Room,” offers an opportunity for deeper discussions and private feedback. The Veterinary Rounds Blog is meant to bridge the gap between these spaces, and will be filled with practical insights, honest reflections, and tips from the trenches of vet med.
To reintroduce myself: I’m Katie Hogan. I’m a 2016 Auburn CVM graduate who thought that becoming a veterinarian would solve all of my problems… only to feel a little bit adrift once I finally started practicing. I hopped around through a few different jobs for the first decade of my career, but never found a clinic that checked all of my boxes.
Finally, in 2023, I started my own independent veterinary relief business: Hogan Veterinary Relief, PLLC. My hope was that working as a relief veterinarian at several clinics would allow me to figure out what I was meant for professionally, and what type of clinic I fit best in. Imagine my surprise when I realized that veterinary relief work was what suited me best.
Working at several different veterinary practices as an associate and as a relief veterinarian has given me a unique perspective, and I’m excited to share it with you.
Here’s what you can expect from The Veterinary Rounds Blog in the upcoming months:
- Thoughtful veterinary content… not just click bait or quick snippets
- Posts focused on relief work, career autonomy, and making your veterinary career work for you
- Ideas about how to actually heal from burnout (and how to avoid it again)
- Goal setting, achievement, and performance insights
- Clinical pearls, practical insights, and other tips and tricks
- … and much more!
